Awards

Back in 2004, the first ever Protection Review Award was launched. It was the Personality of the Year Award, which has since been won by a number of outstanding individuals including Chris Perrott, Tom Baigrie, Nick Kirwan and many more.

Last year we introduced a number of new categories, in response to industry demand. This year, we have made further improvements by opening up the shortlist voting across the industry and we would like to thank all those who voted. Many of you also provided reasons for your votes, which were taken into account during the judging day held in April this year.

We have added no new awards this year and are happy that we now reward many of the people and organisations who have done most to advance life and health insurance. There are countless ways to decide awards but we believe our approach is as unbiased as possible. Unlike a certain global football competition, there are no financial incentives, votes for sale or 'presents' to cloud our judgement.

As always, the final choices remain ours - after all, since 2003 it's been Protection Review's role to analyse where the industry is going and who's doing what; who's up and who's down. As the book's editors we spend the year gathering information and evidence and use that, with your views and votes, and more years' experience than we care to remember (ok, more than ten decades!), to decide who we believe most merits each award. And some of those choices will be a 'shoo-in', while others may surprise you because they may not be loudest shouters or the best known people or organisations. But our aim for the awards remains exactly as it always has - to reward excellence but not to be a popularity vote or a case study based exercise because, fundamentally, they are simply a snapshot of Protection Review's views. The ultimate test is do we get it right? Only you can tell us that!

We are pleased to annouce the shortlists based upon your votes for this year's awards as follows:

Innovation Award in association with Gen Re

Underwriter of the Year in association with Risk Assured

Individual Protection Adviser of the Year in association with PruProtect

Protection Journalist of the Year in association with Ageas Protect
